Z'ev Ben Shimon Halevi

Z'ev, who has mixed Sephardic and Ashkenazic ancestry, teaches what he calls the "Toledano tradition" of the Kabbalah, which is a particular form of the Sephardic school which derives from mediaeval Toledo in Spain.

Practical Qabalah Power of the Subconscious Mind and preconditioning

A lot of emphasis in the early stages of the Qabalah focuses on the state of the subconscious and exploring how the conscious, subconscious and higher mind (intuition / sixth sense) all work together. The spiritual journey of the Qabalah … Continue reading

Judaism and Ancient Mystery Religions

Beneath the surface of Judaism there has always existed a strong element of mystery. For most Jews, however, the zeal for studying the Torah in search of any relationship to the ancient tantalizing mystery religion ingredients are sufficiently gratified by the body of the Mosaic Law, not to mention the redoubtable commentaries that accompany them.  Thus [...]

Interestingly enough, mythology and esoterics wins the day! In my last post i wrote about experimenting with increased testosterone, and found my theories to be totally wrong. Sex function is NOT a product of Mars energy, but it’s energy is involved. Muscle growth is key in testosterone, but it will make you tired and lethargic. [...]

Care Abdul, Thank you for your kind words. We don't have any of our initiates who are members of Bnei Baruch, although one of our Chiefs is aquainted with one of the Swedish leaders of that group. On the face of the web page and based upon conversations with the said Swedish leader, it seems to be a serious organization who has developed a workable training program through the web. It does follow the Qabalah of Isaac Luria, however students of the Hermetic Qabalah (such as that taught in the Golden Dawn) won't find many references that are similar. It seems to be a philosophical school rather than practical, with some sionist undertones. Bnei Baruch also seems to shun any magical practicies, so I don't know how keen they are about having Rosicrucians and Golden Dawn initiates in their membership. That being said, I believe it is a spledid school if you want to learn orthodox Qabalah which follows the Hebrew interpretation of the Torah and Talmud, etc. Fraternally in L.V.X., Gryende Morgonrodnaden

Comment on New Reports and Suspicious Cases by The Hounded Few

IF YOU FOLLOW THIS LINE OF THOUGHT IN THESE LINKS YOU WILL SEE HOW JACOB IN ALCHEMY IS CONNECTED SYMBOLICALLY TO THE SERPENT The sphere and hoop associated with Cranach's infants are suggestive also of change and regeneration. They may perhaps be linked with that still older symbol of ancient Egypt, the Ouroboros, the serpent biting its own tail, signifying eternity. Jacob as symbol in alchemy JACOB seen as a type of hermes mercurious regulus ORlittle king and serpent on the tau cross. The caduceus consists of two serpents entwined around a central rod. It is the symbol of Mercury. This symbol was developed from the myth of Mercury http://www.polenth.com/myth/alchemy.html MERCURIUS By the late Tony Jackson (composed for a Homeopathy course exam) Let's return now to the mythology of Hermes/Mercury and see how we can interweave the myth and the alchemy with the pathology of Mercurius. In the Homeric Hymn to Hermes, we learn for the first time of Hermes the trickster; how he stole his brother’s cattle when still only a babe in arms. How he: “then cut off from the herd the fifty loud-lowing kyne, and drove them straggling-wise across a sandy place, turning the hoof prints aside. Also, he bethought him of a crafty ruse and reverse the marks of their hooves, making the front behind and hind before, while he himself walked the other way."[7] In driving the cattle, Hermes simulates a backwards movement, skilfully done by reversing the sandals and the hoof prints of the cattle, a movement in one direction which appears as a movement in the opposite direction[8]. For me this represents and is a metaphor for man in the world. Man in nature. Man having to use his wiles to survive, to trick the gods, to buck his fate. To be able to make connections to his own advantage. Sibling rivalry is the world’s oldest theme, many examples of which are found in the Old Testament, with Cain and Abel, Jacob and Esau and Joseph and his brothers. Rafael Lopez-Pedraz in his Book Hermes and his Children, explains it thus: “The secret of this kind of cheating is that it is Hermetic. Hermes would never fall into the trap of talking with his elder brother and father from the viewpoint of the ruling consciousness they represent. Many analysts have seen a paralysed psyche or a life destroyed because a son has been unable to respond to the parental demand that he live in their orderly 'truth' and who, at the same time, is unable to cheat them. By cheating, I mean Hermetic cheating that would protect his psyche.”[9] If we explore the myths of Hermes we find further reference to sexuality through his relationship with the nymphs. Not only to sexuality but also to madness. Kerenyi writes: "In our language Nympholeptus, 'one who was seized by the nymphs', was the word for what the Latins called lymphaticus--a term in which lympha is a rendering of 'nymph', but in the sense of 'water'--or lunaticus, “moon-sick”, which was a later word for a person who became crazy from time to time (perhaps only slightly) and was regarded as a victim of the nymphs"[11]. Another son of Hermes was bathing in a pool of crystal clear-water, naked, and was seen by the naiad Salmacis. She falls in love with his beautiful form and cried out 'He is mine', and casting off all her garments dives into the waters. She holds him fast against all his struggles, stealing reluctant kisses, fondling him and touching his unwilling breast, and wraps him in her embrace as a coiled serpent. She cries out to the gods that they should never become separated and in hearing her prayer the gods grant her wish and the two bodies become knitted together as a Hermaphrodite. “After bathing in that uncanny pool with the nymph Salmacis, the beautiful boy, resembling Eros, realises his new condition and feels himself weakened, his limbs enfeebled”[12]. The hermaphrodite raises imagery of sexual ambiguity, so dominant a symptom in Mercurius.[13] Mercurius was confined to the bottle by the alchemists in order to transform him. Mercurius, following the tradition of Hermes, is many-sided, changeable and deceitful. He is said to be dual-natured “By the philosophers I am named Mercurius; my spouse is the philosophic gold; I am the old dragon, found everywhere on the face of the earth, father and mother, youthful and ancient, weak and yet very strong, life and death, visible and invisible; I descend into the earth and ascend to the heavens, I am highest and lowest … I am the carbuncle of the Sun, a most noble, purified earth, by which you may turn copper, iron, tin and lead into purest gold.” JACOB /MERCURY / MERCURIOUS THE SERPENT THE REGULUS LITTLE KING THE CONNECTOR OF THINGS WAY TO BUILD THE TEMPLE Mercury, in astrological terms, is about connection: making links; communication; wit, cunning and intellect (quicksilver = quick mind) connecting things and ideas, revelation, the imagination, language and understanding. Mercurius plays with ideas and finds links between them. Above all, Mercury is about process, and that implies movement, conscious and unconscious, physical and non-physical - turning on the light, metaphorically speaking (Mercury has an industrial use in electric switches). Mercury rules connections, from roads and transport to telephone and radio, from information systems to the world-wide web and satellite communications (There is a telephone company called Mercury). Hermes rules roads and travel, protecting the crossroads, highways and byways. We can imagine a man travelling along the obscure roads of life, either guided or led astray by Hermes, and in need of an instinctual omen (Hermes) to mark his movement along the way. Mercury is the messenger of the Gods: the link between mankind and the gods, http://www.alchemywebsite.com/tony_jackson_mercurius.doc How Else Were Snakes Depicted? Sometimes, images of snakes varied in alchemical texts. Other popular motifs of serpents include: * a large dragon biting its own tail, often shown standing on top of the earth or a large tree * two dragons biting each other's tails * two dragons with intertwined necks; one facing the sun, the other facing the moon * a large serpent wrapped around a cross * a large serpent wrapped around the body of a man http://western-philosophy.suite101.com/article.cfm/serpents_in_hermetic_philosophy MERCURY AS JACOB /HERMES LITTLE KING REGULUS JACOBS LADDER IN ALCHEMY The seven-runged ladder is another common feature of alchemical symbolism, the rungs representing the seven metals, the operations of alchemy, and the associated heavenly bodies. One of the paintings of Splendor Solis (1582), for example, shows a man standing on the sixth and seventh rungs (representing silver and gold) and gathering the golden fruit of the Philosophic Tree, from the roots of which issues the Hermetic Stream. In the later Mutus Liber a young man, using a stone for his pillow, is shown asleep at the foot of a ladder bearing ascending and descending angels; this stone, upon which the biblical Jacob poured oil, was sometimes accepted as a symbol of the Philosopher's Stone. Concept of Jacob’s Ladder Exploring the Philosophical Meaning of The Ladder of Heaven Mar 30, 2007 W. Hommel "Jacob's Ladder" is a biblical concept, but for Hermetic philosophers it was also symbolic of man's transformation, and his connection to the universe. What is Jacob’s Ladder? In the book of Genesis (28,12), Jacob had a dream in which he saw a ladder extending to the gate of heaven. For Hermetic philosophers, the ladder became an important symbolic motif. It was often used to convey the interlocking world of God, the soul and man. In some Hermetic texts, the ladder was depicted as a series of chains, each representing a different "sphere" of consciousness. All of these spheres were linked together, and like man, were each connected to "the true essence of God." The Ladder and Other Hermetic Concepts Often, the ladder was associated with other Hermetic concepts and ideas. It was used to represent a wide range of different theories and philosophical notions. The following list explores some of these ideas: * Ladder and Sephiroth Sometimes, the ladder was interchangeable with the concept of "Sephiroth." The Sephiroth tree comprises the basis of Cabala. Often depicted by ten numbered spheres in alchemical and Hermetic texts, the Sephiroth tree is symbolic of the world of the divine, and the world of material goods. Not only does the Sephiroth tree comprise the foundation of the universe, but it is responsible for mankind as well. * Cycle of Nature and Life Here, each sphere was shown linked together, and represented the cycle of life. The last sphere would connect to the first, thereby linking the cycle of life and death. Hermetics believed everything in the universe ultimately went around in a circle. They believed the universe originated from a single source. * Axis Mundi The ladder itself was often used to point toward the direction of "The One." It became easily recognizable in manuscripts, but was also a popular subject matter for artists such as William Blake. Blake, a mystic, illustrated several examples of Jacob’s Ladder through vivid paintings. Read on * Kabbalah, Cabala, Qabalah, and Jewish Mysticism * Alchemy in the Middle Ages * The Power of Stones * God Cannot be Fully Comprehended Other times, the ladder was shown to depict a Hermetic concept that man cannot fully grasp the concept of God. In manuscripts, a ladder may be shown pointing towards the sky, but not able to reach it. The ladder may point towards heaven, but stops at a certain point because God (also referred to as "The One") is incomprehensible. * Ascent Into the Mysteries of Freemasonry The idea of Jacob’s Ladder was also popular in alchemical theory. Alchemists compared the ascension of the ladder to the transformation of raw stone to cubic stone (called lapis). Lapis was believed to contain "everything within itself." It was symbolic of man’s transformation, and his ability to obtain gnosis. http://western-philosophy.suite101.com/article.cfm/concept_of_jacobs_ladder

Comment on The Tarot of Vampyres (of Melrose Place) by Digital Dame

Hahaha :) I thought you had pre-ordered this bad boy as well, I remember your post on it awhile back (May, I think?) And it's nothing if not Gawth with a capital G. I haven't tried reading with it yet, it'll be interesting to see how well it sings once it's on stage. Without the usual visual cues on the minors, you don't really have much to go on except the titles at the bottom. The book gives an average of three pages of dissertation per minor card, the Majors each get four (from what I can tell quickly flipping through). There are no spreads given in the book, either, which I think is a first. Lots on the Tree of Life and Qabalah, though. Lots of reading ahead of me!

Comment on Mysticism and Esotericism by Peregrin

Hi Carl, thanks for this. I have thought about this myself before and the modern tendency to conflate Christian mysticism and esotericism. I am not sure Mr Smoley (whom I have read) gives a good distinction between the two. Historically at least Esotericism was characterised by two main features: (1) an inner body of knowledge or interpretation of exoteric religious forms that were (2) taught to an inner group of students or practitioners. Mysticism, however being the practice of conscious personal communion with the Divine, can and is practiced by Christians who are not esoteric in the traditional understanding of that word and whom are not part of any inner tradition and who have received no ‘special’ or additional teaching. I agree with your comments re the interior 'landscape' on the mystical path. Much of the confusion here I feel stems from a misunderstanding of Hermetic Qabalah and the Tree of Life where the middle pillar is often referred to as the mystical path, the straight and narrow ascent to God. The other paths, taking a more circuitous route are seen as the magical path and the path of the natural man. I feel this is far too simplistic an analysis. Thanks :)
