The Importance of Context for the Emergence of Possibilities

The blog post below is a personal reflection piece of my activities these past two months since leaving SiG at the end of June. I began writing this piece shortly after announcing that I was headed to Europe for graduate school to pursue an MA at the Institute for Social and European Studies in Hungary.

I find that continuous self-reflection is a powerful tool, especially since patterns will begin to emerge as you constantly look back and evaluate your personal goals versus achieved goals. Emotions also play a key role when reflecting, as recalling how you felt at the time a major decision in your life was made, can play a key factor in all future decision-making, helping to provide key insight and understanding into your own life priorities and making it easier to narrow down options the next time you find yourself stuck at a fork in the road in life.

***

The RESET Button

When I started out on this adventure earlier this summer after choosing to leave Social Innovation Generation at the University of Waterloo following the end of my two-year contract, I had absolutely no idea where I would end up come September. I would be lying to you if I told you that I was not scared at all throughout the months leading to the end of my contract in June; that the prospect of letting go of everything that was familiar, everything that I was comfortable with both in Kitchener-Waterloo and Toronto, was really no big deal and that I had all the answers in the world.

To be honest, I was really scared. The thought of the unknown and the unfamiliar was certainly daunting, but the overwhelming feeling of needing to hit the 'reset' button in my life was a lot stronger, leading me to leave everything that I knew behind and pushing myself beyond the limits of my own comfort zone. In order to make this happen from a practical standpoint, I had to reduce all of the different layers of my life, to a point where I was feeling the most vulnerable, and then tell the world,

"OK, what now? Come at me with everything that you've got!

I am ready."

Context is Everything

And this is where the discussion of how important context is for the emergence of possibilities comes into play; possibilities that you otherwise would never have imagined that you would (or could) pursue in a million years, had it not been for the context of the environment itself in which the opportunity emerged.
Since the beginning of this past year, perhaps maybe even earlier, I have been feeling the unnerving pull to do something drastically different with my life, that there was something out there calling me that was as unclear and undefined then, as it is now.

Yet, the only difference between now and then is the context within which these opportunities are emerging.

A
s much as I was beginning to feel part of the emerging, dynamic and #KWawesome culture of Kitchener-Waterloo, involved with helping to plan Ignite Waterloo and TEDxWaterloo among other initiatives, as well as meeting and getting to know a lot of people within the social entrepreneurship community in Toronto, I felt that there was something more out there in the world that I needed to explore.

When I realized that I needed to change the context of my environment - living, studying and working in southwestern Ontario, Canada for the past eight years since I first arrived from the UAE - in order to allow opportunities to emerge that I otherwise could not possibly even imagine, the only thing that made sense to me was not renewing my contract at SiG@Waterloo for another year, selling or giving away all of my unnecessary personal belongings (large furniture, unused/unwanted household items, etc), packing everything that was of personal value in my car, and then driving across the country from Toronto, ON to Cranbrook, BC where my parents currently reside, in order to spend a couple of weeks relaxing and spending quality time with my family, with the beautiful Canadian Rocky Mountains in the background.

"We feel free when we escape, even if it be from the frying pan into the fire"

- Eric Hoffer

Of course, before I embarked on this cross-Canada road trip that was symbolic of changing the context of my environment, I was able to squeeze in a week-long trip with Monika to New York City and Washington, DC. During the trip to Washington DC, I was able to come full-circle on a leadership journey that had started when I was seventeen years old having just graduated from high school in the UAE; when I was invited to deliver the opening keynote speech at the Global Young Leaders Conference. To provide some perspective, I attended the GYLC back in 2002 as a delegate; l
ife is certainly beautiful in the way it unfolds at times.

Two months down the road on this adventure, or 4,000 kms away from Kitchener-Waterloo depending on how you look at it, I had hinted that I would be making my way further out west to Vancouver in September

It seems that this direction was largely influenced by one of the goals that emerged as I was making my way across the country. The very simple, yet almost profound goal of making my way to Mile 0 of the Trans Canada Highway in Victoria, BC, a highway that stretches form coast to coast and is rivalled in length only by the Trans-Siberian Highway and Australia's Highway 1, would certainly go a long way towards completing the journey of hitting the 'reset' button in my life, and starting all over again.

For the time being however, it looks like this personal goal of reaching Mile 0 of the Trans Canada Highway on the west coast will have to wait awhile, as it looks like my life is being pulled in a completely different direction than I could have ever imagined.

I am looking forward to seeing how everything unfolds in Europe. Wish me luck.

To what extent was the Cold War a conflict between two irreconcilable ideologies

Kennan, Zubok, and Malia (“The Cold War-Ideology”, 2010) believe that the Cold War was based on different ideologies, democratic capitalism and communism whereas Halle (Wolk, 2010) and Litvinov (“Comments on Maksim M. Litvinov”, 2010) believe that the Cold War was a struggle for empire. Ideological struggle certainly contributed to the origin of the Cold War, but only to a certain extent. The struggle for empire was a major factor that developed the Cold War.  Although the Cold War started out as a conflict between two ideologies, it eventually shifted to a struggle for empire under the symbols of communism and democracy.

The Russian Revolution in 1917 contributed greatly to the Cold War because it was the establishment of the communist Soviet Union, with a completely different principle from the Western Allies’ democracy and capitalism.  The Allies, particularly USA, perceived this as a threat since Lenin “declared a de facto ideological war on the capitalist ‘bourgeois scum’” (Hughes-Wilson, 2006) and “Long live the worldwide socialist revolution!”(Clark, 1989).  Lenin believed that USSR was encircled by capitalist countries that were ready to attack.  Their opposing ideologies caused deep suspicions and mistrusts, which contributed significantly to the Cold War.

It was clear that there was a shift from a conflict between two ideologies to a conflict between two superpowers, but it might not be clear what the turning point was.  One thing that could be assured was the fact that it started out as an ideology conflict and ended as a power struggle.   According to President Truman, communism was “relies upon …the suppression of personal freedom… it must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities.” (“Truman Doctrine”, 2010).

Then, if the Cold War was not about ideology anymore, what was it about then? Dominance of the world. Stalin’s main concern was not about communism, but he wanted to spread the Russian sphere of influence throughout the world. He did this by using the symbol of communism.  Most communist countries, except Yugoslavia, regarded the Soviet Union as the leader of communism, therefore accepting advices, aids, and even commands from the Soviet Union and Stalin.

Similarly, though not as obviously as the Soviet Union, USA gained dominance in western capitalist countries by implementing Marshall Plan, tagged along with ‘economic advisors’ who ensured that the markets were free and people had ‘freedom’.  Although the ideologies were still present and both sides regarded themselves as ideologists, the Soviets and the Americans were trying to expand their powers and spheres of influence rather than truly defending their ideologies.

Although the Cold War originated from conflicting ideologies, major wars such as Korean War proved that ideologies were just covering USSR’s and USA’s motive: spreading the spheres of influence throughout the world. Korean War was a proxy war between USSR, supporting and ‘giving advices’ to the communist North Korea, and USA, leading UN troops to help capitalist South Korea, rather than a truly ideological war.  Of course, there was still a common theme of communism vs. capitalism and democracy, but it was also geographically important to both superpowers.

South Korea was near Japan, which was considered ‘the American basis of capitalism and democracy in Asia’.  Surely, USA would want to spread its sphere of influence beyond Japan to other parts of Asia.  North Korea, on the other hand, was bordering the east-west Russian border.  Similarly, the Soviet Union would want to take control of the Korean Peninsula through communism, so that it would be no longer ‘encircled by capitalism’, as Stalin had always feared. Ideologies have been used to indicate which side a country was on during the Cold War, but what actually developed the Cold War was the Soviet and American agenda to dominate the world. The Cold War became less about fighting to defend ideologies but more about building empires.

Vietnam War was another obvious example of how the Cold War had shifted from being a conflict about ideologies to a competition for land and influence.  Anti-Vietnam War protestors felt that Vietnam War was an unnecessary conflict which devastated Vietnam, its neighbors, and USA itself: a failure to ‘contain’ communism.  Furthermore, USA was being criticized for controlling and manipulating South Vietnam, acting no differently from USSR who treated Eastern European countries and other communist countries as puppet states.  USA was so determined to contain communism, in another word USSR, from dominating the world that it did not follow its own ideology of giving ‘freedom’ in order to stop USSR from spreading its sphere of influence.

Perhaps one of the most obvious events that indicated the full extent of a power struggle of the Cold War was the launching of Soviet satellite Sputnik1 in 1957, the origin of the space race.  The Soviets showed the Americans that they were able to defeat them in technology.  Clearly, that had hardly anything to do with communism vs. democratic capitalism, but it was a competition of two superpowers who wanted to dominate not only the world, but also the space through advanced technology and innovation.  During the Kitchen Debate in 1959, Khrushchev declared that “in another 7 years, we’ll be at the level of America, and after that we’ll go farther.”("The Kitchen Debate: Nixon And Khrushchev [1959].", 2010).

The Cold War was far beyond a conflict between two irreconcilable ideologies.  It started that way and had maintained the ideologies throughout the Cold War, but as the Cold War progressed, it was about spreading the spheres of influence and dominating the world than defending the ideology.  Ideology turned out merely to be symbols which signify both sides of the Cold War, but not playing as a crucial part in the Cold War’s development as it has always been regarded by Kennan, Zubok, and Malia (“The Cold War-Ideology”, 2010).

Four Quartets by T.S. Eliot, read by Ralph Fiennes

Having read Four Quartets before, I was surprised at how much more I got from it when rereading it while listening to Ralph Fiennes recite it on this new audio version. A long journey for an American icon: The RV turns 100

It started with a grandmother’s thoughtful offer. The Fabers — Ken, his wife, Pieternella, (whom everyone calls Petey) and their 6-month-old daughter, Melania — had traveled from Michigan to Montana in the early 1960s to visit Petey Faber’s mother. Prep cross country: Edgar girls flash championship form at Columbus invite

MARSHFIELD -- The Edgar girls cross country team has quite a bit of time before they have to worry about going for a third straight WIAA Division 3 title. But if the Wildcats' performance at the Marshfield Columbus Invitational on a windy and brisk Saturday at Wildwood Park, they should be right in the hunt come the end of October. With all scoring runners finishing in the top 25, the Wildcats cruised to the Division 3 title with 67 points, well ahead of runner-up Manitowoc Roncalli which finished with 95 points. In the overall standings, Edgar was seventh out of 22 scoring teams and were beaten by only large Division 1 and 2 schools. "We're thinking about it (winning a third straight title), but not too much yet," sophomore Kira Dittman said. "We're working harder than ever so we can be at our best late in the season and whatever happens, happens." Lizzie Pospyahlla led Edgar with a fourth-place finish in 16 minutes, 50 seconds, while Dittman placed ninth. Sara Rosewicz finished 14th, Jessi Krause 20th and Katie Skrzycak 24th to round out Edgar's scoring runners. "Today went well," Dittman said. "We pushed ourselves. Our goal was to win our division and we did that. This was a good step for us on the way to us reach our goals." Added girls coach Dan Parlier, "The girls really stepped up from out Tuesday meet and we are off to a good start. We want to improve each week and try to be competitive at the end of the season." Edgar's boys placed third in the Division 3 team standings and had a top 10 overall performer in senior Alex Faber, who placed ninth in 16:30. "As a team I think we did good and are getting better," Faber said. "Personally I was happy with my ninth-place finish. I surprised myself. I feel like I can run in the low 16s all the time and running a 16:30 this early in the season has me feeling good about running good times." Faber was the top Division 3 boys finisher and teammate Kody Guden wasn't far behind in fifth place. Cody Wanless placed 18th to give the Wildcats three runners in the top 20.
