Lebanon: Polish tourists kidnapped, quickly freed

BEIRUT - The Lebanese army says two Polish tourists were kidnapped near the eastern city of Baalbek but soldiers quickly freed them.

The motive and circumstances surrounding Tuesday's incident were not clear.

The army said soldiers set up checkpoints when they heard of the kidnapping. When one car tried to speed through a checkpoint, soldiers opened fire, killing one of the kidnappers. The other kidnapper fled.

The army statement blamed the Jaafar family, one of the largest and most powerful clans in eastern Lebanon.

The area is known for lawlessness, drug trafficking and clan feuds.

The army said it was interviewing the Polish tourists.

Kidnappings were common during Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war, but not in recent years.

I was looking up Lebanese tourism websites a while ago. Found one where all the photos were stolen from other countries. Lebanese lakes that were actually in Croatia, that sort of thing. Baalbek looks like the real deal though. And you've passed through Bosnia, right? What is it about Holiday Inns and bullet holes? Please tell me the food helped compensate for the heat. Please.
